My First Sugar Detox Experience

I did my first Sugar Detox about a year ago and kept a food journal, which I highly recommend that you do. Instead of focusing on what you can’t have, focus on all of the delicious FWBs (Foods With Benefits) that you CAN have. Then, eat the heck out of them!  My favorites were eggs, sausage, bacon, avocados, roasted cauliflower, and grilled hamburgers with yummy toppings. As I look back, I didn’t eat near enough fish. Make sure to incorporate more fish than I did here. Below is the food journal I kept. Fair warning: there are some TMI moments when I share digestive difficulties. I thought about leaving it out, but I’m a sharer by nature, and it is possible you might experience some of these same issues. I hope this helps give you some ideas!

MY FIRST 21 DAY SUGAR DETOX:

*water with every and in between meals

**How I drink my coffee: Blend coffee with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of each: grass-fed butter and coconut oil. Use an immersion blender to make a delicious, frothy cup of coffee.

Day 1:

  • Breakfast – Scrambled eggs, venison sausage, 1/2 underripe banana, 2 cups of coffee (blended with butter and coconut oil).
  • Lunch – Big salad with turkey, avocado, pine nuts, and olive oil/lemon juice/salt.
  • Snack – CoCo monkey smoothie from 21 Day Sugar Detox (yum! this feels like cheating!). ***see recipe below
  • Dinner – Salmon, roasted cauliflower, side salad.

Day 2:

  • B- Handful of brazil nuts, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 butter blend coffees.
  • L- Big salad with leftover salmon, avocado, pine nuts, olive oil/lemon juice/salt.
  • S- Coco Monkey smoothie.
  • D- Grilled hamburger patty topped with sauteed onions, chopped tomatoes and avocados.
  • S- hot herbal tea (missing my wine, this helps…but only a little!)

Day 3:

  • B- Scrambled eggs with venison sausage, 2 cups butter blend coffee.
  • L- Leftover hamburger patty with toppings.
  • S- decaf coffee with coconut milk, 2 coconut cookies from 21 Day Sugar Detox book (these are just ok, definitely NOT sweet!).
  • D- Ham and split pea soup (don’t think I am supposed to eat split peas?) and coconut flour “biscuit” from 21 Day Sugar Detox.
  • Feeling: Slept GREAT! Body is liking this wine break.

Day 4:

  • B- 2 hard boiled eggs, 2 coconut “biscuits,” 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Big salad with turkey, avocado, tomato, olive oil/lemon juice/salt.
  • S- 2 coconut “cookies,” under ripe banana.
  • D- Bell pepper stuffed with ground beef, avocado, salsa.
  • S- 1 butter blend decaf coffee.
  • Feeling: Constipated. Ugh. Too much coconut flour?

Day 5:

  • B- Bacon, eggs, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Greek Salad from restaurant, unsweetened tea.
  • S- 2 coconut “cookies.”
  • D- Cauliflower crust “pizza” topped with sauteed onions and pepperoni.
  • Feeling: want wine soooooooo bad

Day 6:

  • B- Cauliflower pizza wrap with sausage and salsa.
  • L- Leftover stuffed pepper.
  • S- cup of roasted brussel sprouts (can’t keep my hands out of them as I’m preparing dinner), decaf butter blend coffee.
  • D- Steak, roasted brussel sprouts, broccoli.

Day 7:

  • B- Cauliflower pizza wrap with sausage and salsa, 1/2 c. leftover brussel sprouts.
  • L- 2 coconut “biscuit” sandwiches with turkey and avocado.
  • S- Coco Monkey smoothie and, later, herbal tea with coconut oil and pinch of cinnamon.
  • D- Big salad with bacon, proscuitto, avocado, pine nuts, bacon vinaigrette.
  • Feeling: Awful. Constipated, tired, bad allergies. Am I having a candida die-off? (note: it is very common to have reactions such as these. Your body is starting to purge the bad stuff!)

Day 8:

  • B- Eggs and bacon, 2 c. butter blend coffee,
  • L- Cauliflower pizza wrap with sausage and salsa.
  • S- 1 coconut “cookie”
  • D- Fried deer meat (coated with almond flour and cooked in butter), broccoli.
  • Feeling: Better – awake, head seems more clear, but still constipated (too much coconut flour I think) and slightly congested.

Day 9:

  • B- 2 pieces sausage, 2 coconut “biscuits,” 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Beef jerky and plantain chips (whoops! on the road and didn’t plan well).
  • S- green apple and handful of almonds.
  • D- Baked cod and big salad.
  • S- Mooless chocolate mousse from 21 Day Sugar Detox.
  • Feeling: still very constipated.

Day 10:

  • B- 2 almond flour pancakes (no syrup!), 1 piece of sausage, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • L- Big salad with leftover deer meat, avocado, bacon vinaigrette.
  • S- herbal tea and underripe banana
  • D- Leftover cod and roasted cauliflower.
  • Feeling: Proud – iced Valentine cookies with my kids for school and I didn’t even lick my fingers!!

Day 11:

  • B- Bacon and eggs, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Greek salad from restaurant and unsweetened tea.
  • S- 2 coconut cookies, 2 bites underripe banana.
  • D- Chicken, sauteed spinach, and artichokes over spaghetti squash noodles.
  • S- Decaf butter blend coffee and 1/4 under ripe banana.

Day 12:

  • B- Eggs, sausage, coconut “biscuit,” 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • S- another butter blend coffee.
  • L- Finish off the leftover cod and cauliflower.
  • D- Leftover chicken, spinach, artichokes over spaghetti squash noodles. It’s a leftover kind of day!

Day 13:

  • B- 3 coconut “biscuits,” 2 pieces sausage, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Chicken “noodle” soup (spaghetti squash noodles), green apple.
  • S- leftover chicken, spinach, artichokes over ss noodles.
  • D- Grilled chicken and sausage.
  • S- Herbal tea with coconut oil.
  • Feeling: constipated again, sinus headache

Day 14:

  • B- Eggs and 1 coconut “biscuit,” 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • S- big handful granola and 1 chocolate/almond butter cup (granola and choc/ab cups from 21 Day Sugar Detox).
  • L- Hamburger patty with sauteed onions, avocado, salsa.
  • D- Party at Pam’s. Fail: Gumbo, boudin, bacon wrapped cream cheese jalapenos. Win: Didn’t drink or indulge in any of the many many desserts! My “mocktail” – coconut water mixed with sparkling mineral water.
  • Feeling:Very very proud that I did not drink even though all of my friends were. It was hard but rewarding!

Day 15:

  • B- Eggs, handful of granola, 1 choc/almond butter cup, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Chicken “noodle” soup, 1/2 avocado, 1 choc/AB cup.
  • D- Brisket topped with grilled onions, avocado, salsa, side of roasted cauliflower.
  • S- herbal tea with coconut milk.

Day 16:

  • B- Granola with coconut milk, 2 c. butter blend coffee + 1/2 c. black coffee.
  • L- Chicken jerky and a green apple.
  • S- 1 choc/AB cup, leftover cauliflower, cup of chicken broth.
  • D- Fajita Salad with chicken, beef, pico de gallo, guacamole, sauteed onions and peppers.
  • S- butter blend herbal tea.

Day 17:

  • B- Granola with coconut milk, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- Big salad with chicken, avocado, olive oil/lemon juice/salt.
  • S- herbal tea with coconut oil and 1 choc/AB cup.
  • D- Crab dipped in melted butter, big salad with avocado.
  • Feeling: Kind of gut heavy from the granola – that’s a lot of nuts!

Day 18:

  • B- Sausage and eggs, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- 2 roast beef roll-ups (roast beef, lettuce, avocado).
  • S- 2 choc/AB cups.
  • D- Hamburger patty with sauteed onions, avocado, and roasted cauliflower.

Day 19:

  • B- Bacon and eggs, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • L- 3 roast beef roll-ups, 1 under ripe banana.
  • D- Homemade Paleo Pizza (coconut flour crust topped with ground beef, roasted cauliflower, sauteed garlicky spinach.

Day 20:

  • B- Scrambled eggs with leftover spinach, 2 c butter blend coffee, 2 c butter blend decaf coffee (yikes! too much coffee!).
  • L- 3 roast beef roll-ups.
  • S- 4 choc/AB cups.
  • D- Steak and roasted brussel sprouts.
  • S- herbal tea with coconut oil.

DAY 21!!!

  • B- Leftover Paleo pizza, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • L- 2 roast beef roll-ups.
  • S- apple and 1 c. decaf butter blend coffee.
  • D- Fried venison and butternut squash.
  • Feeling: SO good I think I’ll keep on going!

Day 22:

  • B- 2 almond flour pancakes (no syrup), deer sausage, 2 c. butter blend coffee.
  • L- scraps from the kids’ lunch: deer meat and lunch meat.
  • S- apple, 1 c decaf butter blend coffee.
  • D- Chicken “noodle” soup.

Day 23:

  • B- Eggs, bacon, brussel sprouts, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • L- Granola with coconut milk.
  • S- Handful of almonds, green apple, brussel sprouts.
  • D- Fajitas: chicken and beef topped with pico de gallo and guacamole.
  • S- Mooless chocolate mousse from 21 Day Sugar Detox
  • Feeling: Ugh – too many nuts today.

Day 24:

  • B- Eggs and roasted butternut squash with melted butter, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • S- Coco Monkey smoothie.
  • L- Leftover fajitas.
  • S- few bites of Paleo zucchini muffin.
  • D- Spaghetti (squash) Carbonara, 1 bite mooless chocolate mousse.

Day 25:

  • B- 2 Paleo zucchini muffins, sausage, 2 c butter blend coffee.
  • L- Leftover spaghetti (squash) carbonara, mooless chocolate mousse.
  • D – ground beef mixed with roasted cauliflower, onions, and salsa.
  • Feeling: Great! But ready to drink some vino. This is the last day!

COCO MONKEY SMOOTHIE from 21 Day Sugar Detox

  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1 cup coconut milk or almond milk
  • 1 green-tipped banana, frozen
  • 2 T almond butter or almond flour
  • 3 T unsweetened cocoa powder
  • small handful of ice

              Mix all ingredients in a blender. Enjoy!
